Review in Fashion & Beauty Reality TV..."America's Next Top Model & Shear Genius" Wednesday March 17th 2010

Hello Fashionistas and Fashionistos! Just in case your were or weren't watching last nights lineup of "Fashion Reality" TV, I wanted to share a recap on the eventful evening and my personal thoughts. I also want to give you a chance to chime in...

ANTM Cycle 14....for those who haven't been fieeerrrrccce for the last 13 cycles; ANTM is the much used acronym for America's Next Top Model.

The first challenge was a "nude" photo shoot featuring the fabulous accessories and design pieces from Salvatore Ungaro. This pleased me because, the weak are being weened out EARLY! Some of my favorites were Angelea, Jessica and Brenda as were the judges, but I have to disagree with them about Naduah, while I do agree that her pose was "too classic", it was pretty. I thought she sold the shades very well. Ren isn't special to me right now, if anything, very less than mediocre because of both her emotional weakness, and lack of knowledge. You can't rely on JUST a strong facial structure forever. I also agreed with Gabrielle's poor performance, I truly didn't think she was "odd" enough from the beginning to be a true supermodel. As a result she was sent home.

Brenda, Nadurah, Alasia, Angelea & Alexandra

The Perfume/Beauty Shot challenge proved to be a redeemer for some girls like Alasia and Simone whose performances in the nude challenge had them on the ropes. Front runner Brenda, did not fair so well due to not knowing her most flattering angle and ultimately aging herself by 10 years in the photos. The water, wind and weather took its toll on many of the other girls, causing them to struggle to perform. My and the judges favorite was Raina. She is strikingly beautiful and not having to produce a full body shot and being able to focus on "the money" aka her strong face was in her favor!

Ren, Simone & Raina

The next challenge was straight to a pendulum runway after some training with the newly relaxed haired Ms. Jay. There weren't any REAL standout stars in the training but during the show there were surely some bloopers!!! Alexandra, Alexandra, Alexandra! Poor darling fell down steps, THEN to add insult to injury; literally, she was knocked off the runway! She luckily was not eliminated due to others doing more poorly than her. Naduah again was critiqued heavily on her lack of taking direction, not following through with her image and was sent home after the runway and perfume challenges. Shocked!?..yes I was. I at least believed they would have given her another week to redeem herself but unfortunately not! I believe that Ren will break next, being in the bottom two with Naduah.

Tonight's show had two interesting challenges. They should have been simple, but because the stylists were thrown African American hair and period pieces, some over thought it and some were a fish out of water.

Shear Genius' Runner up Mathew, Front Runner Janine & Crazy Brig!

Why is it that African American hair such a challenge?...Some stylists like Janine and Brian rose to the occasion while others like Brig and Jon were criticized by the judges for messy and/or too over the top work. Personally i liked Brig's style. Yes, it was very high fashion and she did take the easy way out by not dealing with much of the models natural hair, the end result was very striking and the client LOVED it!

The winner of the challenge Janine, did do an excellent job with Grecian/Gwen Stefani inspired style. The edges were clean (most important) and the gold ribbon inter-graded in the thick coiled horse braid was creative.

The next challenge required the stylists to hone in on period/decade pieces for a red carpet event featuring amazing British singing sensation Estelle.

Once again Janine rose to the occasion. Her assigned piece was to produce a Diana Ross, supreme style on an African American woman. The model looked like an old black barbie, in a good way. Though the styles' shape was executed well, I saw room for improvement with the smoothing of the curls and toning down the size.

Brian...what to say? It was borderline MESS! The styling was great! but his coloring technique based on his historical reference was not translated well. Even if he was on the mark, his judgment should have told him that it was not acceptable. Of course he went home...

...this was a big "whew" for Brig who survived by the hairs of her chinny, chin, chin. Her Style was safe, boring and definitely not a red carpet hairstyle. She intended on pulling off an Afro with a model whose hair was extremely curly, but didn't execute probably because of fear. She better pick it up next week or else I see her going home...

Next week, lets see if Janine keeps shining or if her friend Mathew who is high on her heels pulls a Kentucky derby win.
